Hope Walk 2021: In memory of Louis Gunning

July 16th 2021, 1:39 pm by Arran Hodges

Louis had a smile that lit up a room, he always looked so happy.

The story of an 18 year old young person from Wrexham, who took his own life in June.

Vicky Byrne is a teacher at Ysgol Bryn Alyn, and is challenging herself retrace the steps that he took on his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award expedition as part of HOPEWALK which is a Papyrus event that takes place every October to raise vital funds for suicide prevention and to smash the stigma around suicide.

Suicide is the biggest killer of young people under 35 in the UK.

Vicky said;

I have been a high school teacher for 23 years, in the last four years 8 of our former pupils have sadly taken their own lives. I will be walking in memory of Louis Gunning who tragically passed away on June 28th 2021. Louis was more than a former pupil, he was a family friend who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

If you're a young person reading this right now, it can be very hard to talk about your feelings. However, sharing your worries with someone you trust can really help relieve some of the pressure.

Arran spoke to Vicky earlier today. Listen here.
